The Salem Difference
Lutheran school academics are divided into Early Childhood Program, K-8 Program, and Special Classes Programs.
Salem Lutheran School’s K-8 program provides a Christ-centered education to students in the Affton community. Through a rigorous academic curriculum, Salem Lutheran School equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in high school and beyond.
Students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade use iPads in the classroom, and 4th-8th grade students each have their own Chromebook and utilize Google Classroom. Salem has a tech staff member to support our students.
Religion
Religion is a core subject that provides students with the knowledge and understanding of Christianity and its impact on society. It also helps them develop a personal relationship with God.
Students begin the confirmation process at Salem in 7th grade. Each student receives a prayer partner: a member of the church or school who prays for the students and sends them notes of encouragement. During 8th grade, they complete their Christian Witness and become confirmed.
Language Arts
Students receive daily instruction in reading, writing, and grammar. Salem’s Language Arts Program is designed to foster exemplary communication and well-read students.
Mathematics
Students begin with basic math concepts continuing on to pre-algebra or algebra in middle school. Our goal is to develop confident, competent mathematicians who are prepared for success in high school and beyond.
Science
Our curriculum is specifically designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the major branches of science, including general science, biological science, earth science, and physical science. Students spend time outdoors on our campus, on field trips, and even dissecting in our school for hands-out science exploration.
Social Studies
Students explore the differences and similarities of many cultures, world religions, societies, and histories. In addition, students are given opportunities to develop research and writing skills.
Art
Students at Salem enjoy art classes once each week in grades K through 8. By integrating the four visual art strands, History, Criticism/Analysis, Aesthetics, and Product/Performance, students will create various grade-appropriate projects to demonstrate their understanding of the basic elements of Art (line, shape, value, texture, and color). Students will employ the elements and principles of art to create sophisticated and meaningful art. Select Salem art students also participate in the Lutheran High School South art show in the spring.
Physical Education
Our physical education classes teach students the importance of regular exercise, proper nutrition, and injury prevention. This program is designed to help students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
Kids Choristers
Kids Choristers is a school choir comprised of all kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students. The choir concentrates on learning to sing as a group with proper vocal technique. The choir sings for chapel and other school and community events.
Kids’ Praise
Kids’ Praise is a school choir comprised of all students in 3-5th grades. The choir concentrates on proper choral technique and singing in parts. The choir sings for chapel and other school and community events.
Middle School Choir
Middle School Choir is a school choir comprised of all students in 6-8th grades. The choir continues to emphasize proper choral and vocal singing with an eye to singing as a life-long endeavor. The choir sings for chapel and other school and community events.
Middle School Handbells
Salem School 7th and 8th grade students participate in a year of handbells. Proper handbell technique and working together as an ensemble are stressed. The handbell choir rings for chapel and other school and community events.
The Learning Center
At Salem, we pride ourselves in meeting the individualized needs of all students. One way we do that is through The Learning Center. Our staff works collaboratively with students, classroom teachers, and parents so that each child is meeting their God-given abilities. We are also able to pull in our Speech Therapist as part of the team. The Learning Center is a non-profit program supported by the Lutheran Association for Specialized Education (LASE).
Under this program, students who need extra support are included in their regular classrooms as well as small groups and one on one. With an experienced teacher and a supportive environment, Salem offers an ideal setting for students with special needs to thrive.
Counseling Services
Salem has two counselors on staff, serving grades Kindergarten through 8th.
They provide services through a Children’s Services Fund grant to support students with social-emotional needs during the school day. They are both passionate about meeting the needs of the whole student and advocating for normalizing the stigma surrounding mental health services. Our counselors utilize evidence-based interventions to support students experiencing various social-emotional concerns, including emotional regulation, divorce/separation, transitions, self-esteem, and peer relationships.
